In a community where art was never seen as a real profession, Jazib grew up believing his passion for painting was little more than a pastime. At Mashal Model School, art wasn’t even part of the curriculum – until Discovering New Artists (DNA) stepped in.
Since 2014, DNA has supported Mashal Model School with free art materials, workshops, and access to its flagship initiative, Art for Change. For students like Jazib, it was often the first time anyone had handed them a brush and taken the result seriously.
Jazib made the most of it. Year after year, he competed, learned, and grew – earning multiple prizes and scholarships along the way. What started as a hobby became a genuine path forward.
That path led somewhere remarkable: Jazib was appointed as Mashal Model School’s very first dedicated art teacher. The student who once relied on donated supplies now stands at the front of the classroom, passing that same opportunity on to the next generation. He earns a dignified income doing what his community once dismissed as impractical, and supports his family with pride.
Jazib’s story is, in many ways, DNA’s mission in miniature. It’s proof that talent doesn’t need a privileged zip code to flourish – it needs materials, mentorship, and someone willing to believe in it before the results justify that belief. One art teacher, in one school, in one community that once had none. That’s not just a personal success story. That’s a mindset shift, one classroom at a time – and it’s exactly the kind of ripple effect Discovering New Artists was built to create.
